The Story Behind the Shot
The Story Behind the Shot
The Media Man’s Guidebook by Lorenzo Burnside
Welcome back to The Media Man’s Guidebook. Today, we’re stepping behind the lens. I’ve been a photographer for about two years now, and in that short time, I’ve been blessed to shoot some powerful names TD Jakes, Kevin Gates, NLE Choppa, King Combs, Nicki Minaj, and even Vice President Kamala Harris. It’s been a journey, and what I’ve learned more than anything is that you don’t need the fanciest gear to take great photos. What you need is understanding.
It all comes down to knowing your tools. Whether you’re working with a basic camera or something top tier, the same rules apply. You have to understand how shutter speed, ISO, and f-stop work together in real-time. That’s what separates an average picture from a great one. Once you lock that in, the gear becomes an extension of you.
There’s also the part that people don’t talk about how to act on the job. Sometimes, you have to blend in and be invisible. This is true for events like concerts, church services, or speeches, where your job is to catch the moment without interrupting it. But at other times, like weddings or big group shots, you have to take control and be seen so you can direct people, frame the scene, and get the shot right the first time.
And of course, you can’t forget about lighting. That’s a whole subject by itself, but if you take one tip from this post, it’s this: light can make or break your photo. Learn to use it, work around it, and position yourself to take advantage of it, no matter the environment.
According to National Geographic, “Photography has the power to shape our understanding of the world, influence public opinion, and inspire action.” I’ve seen that power firsthand. When I take a photo, I’m not just snapping a moment I’m telling a story without saying a word.
Thanks for tuning in to another post. I’ll drop a few photos of my work so you can see the work I produce. As always, I appreciate you for stopping by. Let’s keep learning and conquering the media world together.
